Before You React to Your Child, Ask What They Woke Up in You

Let’s get honest.

Sometimes your child is not the reason for the size of your reaction.

They may be whining. Refusing to get dressed. Crying over the wrong cup. Ignoring you when you have asked them five times to do something. They may be loud, emotional, messy, defiant, or simply needing more from you than you have to give in that moment.

And suddenly, your body reacts before your mind catches up.

Your jaw clenches. Your voice sharpens. You feel overwhelmed, disrespected, helpless, or completely out of control.

Then comes the guilt.

But guilt alone does not help us change. Awareness does.

Because sometimes what feels like anger toward our child is actually an old feeling being touched inside us.

Maybe nobody allowed you to have big emotions when you were young. So your child’s tears make your nervous system want to shut them down quickly.

Maybe you were expected to obey without question. So your child’s resistance feels like disrespect, even when they are simply learning autonomy.

Maybe you had to grow up too fast. So their neediness touches the part of you that never got to need anyone safely.

This does not mean your child gets to run the house. Boundaries still matter. Parenting still requires leadership. But leadership does not need to come from fear, shame, or an old wound being activated.

It can come from regulation.

The next time you feel yourself escalating, try one small pause.

Ask: Am I responding to what my child is doing—or to what this moment has woken up in me?

You may still need to hold the boundary. You may still need to say no. You may still need to remove yourself for a minute so you can settle your own body first.

But that pause changes the energy of the moment.

And for parents-to-be, this is preparation that rarely gets talked about. People will ask about your birth plan, the nursery, the stroller, the sleep schedule. Fewer people will ask: What situations make your body feel unsafe, unheard, powerless, or out of control?

Start noticing now.

Your awareness will not make parenting effortless. But it can keep your child from becoming responsible for feelings that were never theirs to carry.
