Why Your Health and Wellbeing Need to Come First

5 min read 995 words 1 views

Putting your health and wellbeing first is often misunderstood as choosing yourself over everyone else. In reality, it means recognizing that your ability to care, work, lead, support and respond depends on the condition you are in while doing it.

When your energy is depleted, even ordinary responsibilities begin to feel heavier.

Patience shortens.

Decision-making becomes harder.

Small problems feel urgent.

You may still keep going, but often by overriding what your body and emotions are telling you.

That is why wellbeing cannot remain the thing you attend to only after everything else is finished. For many people, everything else is never finished.

Care Is Not Something You Have to Earn

The shift begins by moving away from the idea that care has to be earned.

Rest is not a reward for completing the list.

Support is not something you deserve only after proving that you cannot manage alone.

Looking after yourself is part of what allows your life to function in a more sustainable way.

It also requires questioning the belief that being responsible means handling everything personally.

Sometimes what looks like responsibility is actually control, habit or fear.

You may step in because you can do it faster, because you do not trust how someone else will handle it or because allowing another person to struggle makes you uncomfortable.

The problem is that constantly taking over can create a system in which everyone relies on you while you become increasingly exhausted. It may also prevent other people from developing confidence, responsibility and ownership.

A healthier approach is to pause before automatically fixing, planning or rescuing. Ask yourself whether the responsibility truly belongs to you, whether someone else is capable of handling it and whether the outcome really needs to look the way you would prefer.

This does not mean withdrawing care or abandoning the people who depend on you. It means offering support without making yourself responsible for every decision, emotion or result.

What Can You Let Go Of?

Another important shift is learning to separate what is essential from what is simply expected. Not everything has to be done today. Not everything has to be done perfectly. Some tasks can wait. Some standards can soften. Some responsibilities can be shared.

A useful question is:

What will actually happen if this does not get done right now?

That question can reveal how often pressure is being created by guilt, perfectionism or habit rather than by a real consequence.

There will still be seasons when very little can be removed from the plate.

Work may be demanding.

Finances may be difficult.

Caregiving may be unavoidable.

In those moments, putting your wellbeing first may not look like taking a day off or creating a perfect routine.

It may look like eating before you become depleted, drinking enough water, taking ten quiet minutes, asking for practical help, leaving one task unfinished or allowing another person to be disappointed.

These actions may seem small, but they communicate something important: you are not the least important person in your own life.

When the Pattern Is Deeper Than a Busy Schedule

This is where the Wellness Wound™ often shows up.

The Wellness Wound is not simply knowing what to do and failing to do it. It is the deeper pattern that forms when care becomes tied to pressure, perfectionism, self-sacrifice or the belief that you must earn the right to receive support.

It can develop through family roles, cultural expectations, past experiences and years of being praised for being capable, helpful and dependable. You learn to push through, keep going and take care of what everyone else needs.

Over time, that way of functioning becomes so familiar that putting yourself first begins to feel wrong, selfish or unsafe.

The wound is not a lack of information.

Most women already know they need rest, nourishment, movement, boundaries and support. The wound is what keeps pulling them away from those things when life becomes demanding.

It is the guilt that appears when you stop.

The anxiety that rises when someone else does things differently.

The fear that everything will fall apart if you let go.

The discomfort of receiving help after years of being the helper.

The loss of trust that develops when you have started over so many times that even hope begins to feel exhausting.

This is why another plan, routine or list of self-care habits is often not enough. The issue is not always what you are doing. It is the pattern underneath it.

A Different Question Creates a Different Path

Putting your health and wellbeing first requires more than adding another task to the day. It requires understanding why your needs became the most negotiable part of your life in the first place.

The perspective changes when you stop asking, “How can I keep doing all of this?” and begin asking, “What needs to change so I am not always the one absorbing the cost?”

That may mean doing less. It may mean receiving more. It may mean letting someone else learn, struggle or contribute. It may mean accepting that a healthier life will not always look as controlled, productive or polished as an over-functioning one.

But it may feel far more like your own.

Heal Your Wellness Wound™

Heal Your Wellness Wound™ Healing Circles are being created for women who already know something needs to change but are tired of trying to force that change through more discipline, pressure or self-criticism.

Inside the circles, we will explore the patterns that keep pulling you back into over-functioning, why letting go can feel so difficult and how to begin responding differently without abandoning the people or responsibilities that matter to you.

I am currently finalizing the dates, format and enrollment details.
