Hypermobility Syndrome Disorder and Chiropractic Care
Hypermobility syndromes (including HSD/hEDS) involve increased joint range that can contribute to pain, muscle guarding, fatigue, and feelings of instability. Chiropractic care can be beneficial for some hypermobile patients when it’s individualized and stability-informed—often emphasizing low-force techniques, symptom-guided dosing, and neuromuscular control rather than “more motion.” The controversy is valid: high-velocity thrusts and end-range loading may aggravate irritable tissues or reinforce instability in certain joints, and outcomes vary widely. Best practice includes clear informed consent, careful screening for red flags/vascular risk, avoidance of provocative positions, objective re-assessment, and collaboration with a hypermobility-informed PT/medical team to build long-term capacity.
